An old barrack used to be where the government house currently is. This old barrack built between 1886 and 1890 was reconstructed after the first one was destroyed in an arson. It was in this new building that the new recruits of the army were trained during WW I and d WW II. After a call on Radio Tahiti by captain Félix Broche, more than 300 volunteers showed up in front of the gate. Together with other volunteers from New-Caledonia, they formed "le Bataillon du Pacifique" that on battlefiels gloriously fought in North Africa. Less than a hundred of them came back in French Polynesia in may 1946. The barrock was named "Quartier Broche" ofter the cammander.
