En 1891, le premier maire de Papeete rêvait en effet d’installer son tout jeune conseil municipal dans le palais royal (vacant après le décès de POMARE IV), arguant que ce bâtiment historique appartenait au patrimoine culturel de la ville. Ce vœu pieux ne fut pas exaucé et, faute de crédits, le maire dut se contenter d’un vieux bâtiment en bois implanté dans le « square du marché ». (extrait du magazine PAPEETE To tatou Oire)
Inaugurated in 1990 in the presence of the French President, François Mitterrand, the city hall of Papeete is a replica of Queen POMARE IV's palace, that was situated at the Tarahoi square. A hundred years later, François CARDELLA's wish was partly granted.
In 1891, the first mayor of Papeete dreamed of settling his team in the Queen's Palace (that was vacant ofter the Queen's death), saying this building belonged to the cultural heritage of the city. This wish was not granted and, for lack of money, the mayor had to do with an old building in the market place.
Comme vous voyez, l'hôtel de ville est un édifice assez imposant, en tout cas pour Tahiti.

De face, elle nous montre tout son charme. Des mariages sont célébrées presque tous les samedi. Une salle, au rez-de-chaussée est réservée à cet effet.
Weddings are celebrated almost every saturday. A room located on the first floor is dedicated to this.
